The most common disease these days in the world is tooth decay or cavity formation and this is all due to the fast paced lifestyle and our negligence towards our tooth. We brush our teeth once or twice a day and are satisfied that they will remain intact. But this is not the case and the tooth decay or cavity formation is on the rise manifold. People thought that they were eating for health but instead it was destroying a major part of their bodies.

When one of the victims of the teeth cavity Suzanne Walters suddenly finds that she has developed cavities, she blamed it to the antacids that she often took when she wanted to. She never imagined that this habit of her would lead to such a grave situation of cavity formation.

She rushed to her dentists Dr. Vincent Chiara who was well aware of the fact that sugar is the root cause behind this all. Dr. Vincent Chiara, the dentist, had several patients other than Suzanne who developed cavities in no time. She paid a closer attention to the daily eating habits of the subjects having cavities.

Dr. Chiara said, “ People eat a lot of things that have sugar in them and they keep on with this habit without the knowledge of harm that it was doing to their dental health.”

People consume a lot of sugar everyday- be it with tea or coffee, form of candies, lozenges, etc.

A certain part of the lozenges, candies or chocolates we eat reacts with the acid formed in our mouth due to the sweet eatables and thus causes cavities.

In a research carried out by Dr. Gary Grahos, who works at UIC’s College of Dentistry, it was established that the sugar present in our mouth forms an acid that is dangerous for our tooth enamel.

Dr. Drahos says that the area where the mints or lozenges are held in our mouth is the weakest part of the enamel that is the protective coating of our teeth.

Doctors say that the formation of the cavities could be ceased and there are a lot of ways for doing so. The very first thing that you need to do is to reduce the amount of lozenges or mint toffees per day. One can also use the sugar-free format of the same that are easily accessible in the market. It is advised by the dentists worldwide to brush the teeth twice a day. In addition, one can also rinse teeth after eating or drinking tea or coffee or any potable thing that tends to form stains on the enamel.

The other precautionary measure is to lessen the intake of soda or the sweetened carbonated water that damages fluorides and hence our tooth enamel. We must also try the intake of potable and fluorides rich water which comes through the taps only. Though we use more bottled water these days, it is not on par with the regular tap water.
