The trick to starting a new exercise regime is making sure you stay motivated. Whether you’re intending to get down the gym several times a week or you’re just introducing some simple new exercises into your daily routine, motivation can sometimes be an issue. The below are a couple of ideas to help keep you extra motivated.

The first bit of advice is to always speak to a doctor first. This may not seem like a motivational tip but a doctor will be able to advise you on what exercises will suit your body best. A doctor will also be able to help you design a routine that can accommodate any underlying health complaints.

Before you start figure out exactly what it is that’s prompted this new exercise programme. Your reason needs to be as precise as possible. Saying you want to be healthy is great but you need to identify why and why now. Something like wanting to run a marathon to support a friend or wanting to run round the park with your children without getting out of breath. You could simply want to lose weight but you need to identify why and to what degree. You could be looking forward to a holiday and you’d love to fit into your old bikini.

From identifying why, you’ll be able to set your goals. Your goals need to be specific but also realistic. You can have several goals, especially if your overall goal will take a while to achieve, have little tick off goals as you go along. If you want to be fit enough to run a marathon maybe your first goal could be to run one mile without stopping then five etc. Maybe your goal is to drop a few dress sizes then your mini goals could just be to start using the next notch on your belt. You need to write these goals down and have a physical record somewhere you can see them on a daily basis.

Give yourself rewards when you reach these goals. Rewards should not be food related though. If you can relate your reward to your new fitness programme. A new piece of fitness equipment would not only be a good encouragement but it will also introduce a new element to your regime to stop you getting bored. A vibration plate for example would be a fun new ‘toy’ that doesn’t require hours of sweat to show results.

Don’t let yourself get bored and don’t let your new routine get stagnated. Maybe you could try a new fitness class or try a different form of training. A vibration trainer vibrates at dozens of times a second causing the muscle to contract and relax each time. Doing your normal workout on one of these can give your muscles that extra bit of help as well as providing you with something different to experiment with.
